Hip-hop has a tradition of collaboration, but Tony Cobain is a one man army who reps his own lyrical brigade. Armed with a voice and vision completely of his own Tony is a voice of reason. He’s a voice of a generation. He is simply the embodiment of good hip hop and his latest track only solidifies his place as commander in chief to a whole new wave of conscious artist with something to say. On his latest single, “The City (Different Energy),” Tony not only verbally gives hope to the hopeless but visually he paints an amazing story of trial and triumph. Line after line, this one is worth repeating not just for the message but the beautiful soundscape that accompanies the lyrics. The beat is soulful, hard hitting, and filled with determination while Tony’s flow is a classic up top grimy flow. What’s so dope about this track is even though the sound oozes east coast flavor the sound is an easy cross over track for the west. It’s gritty, grimy, and Tony rides every note, every kick, and provides the perfect soundtrack to the streets with this one. His adlibs are on point, the emotion is raw, and the visual provided is just icing on the cake. Tony is one of the most passionate artist I have heard in a long time, you can hear it in his lyrics, feel it in his delivery, and see it in his visuals with that said I am excited to see what he does with a full album.
